MAMMOTH LAKES VOTES TO FILE FOR BANKRUPTCY: MAMMOTH LAKES (AP) — Officials in the town of Mammoth Lakes say they've voted unanimously to file for bankruptcy, in the face of a $43 million judgment that's more than twice the town's budget.
Assistant Town Manager Marianna Marysheva-Martinez says the local council voted Monday and papers could be filed with the court by Tuesday.
The city of 8,000 people about 200 miles southeast of Sacramento has lacked sufficient revenue to pay $2.7 million in obligations and a state court has ordered it to repay its largest creditor, Mammoth Lakes Land Acquisition.
Town officials say that during the Chapter 9 bankruptcy filing, agencies including police and fire services will remain intact.
The filing will make Mammoth Lakes the second local government after Stockton to use a new state mediation process to file for bankruptcy.
SAN DIEGO FIREFIGHTERS RESCUE WOMAN IN POOL TABLE: SAN DIEGO (AP) — Firefighters say they had to help a woman who got stuck in a pool table.
The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said rescue crews were called to the U31 nightclub in North Park early Sunday to help a patron.
Seems the woman got her hand stuck in a pool table hole. The how and why are unclear.
Firefighters say rescue workers freed the woman by cutting out the bottom of the pool table. It took less than 30 minutes and she didn't need any medical attention.
MAN ARRESTED FOR THROWING UNDERAGE BEER PARTY: SAN MARCOS (AP) — San Diego sheriff's deputies say a 25-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly throwing a beer-pong party in his boss' warehouse and charging those under 21 a fee for entry and alcohol.
Eduardo Hidalgo was arrested early Sunday when deputies crashed the party at a warehouse owned by Hirsch Piping Supply.
Deputies say they found three beer kegs, tables set up for beer pong, numerous beer and liquor containers and $886 in cash. Pong is a popular drinking game played with beer cups and ping pong balls.
It was unclear how many people attended the party.
MAN, 63, SURVIVES MOUNTAIN LION ATTACK: NEVADA CITY (AP) — State wildlife officials are searching for a mountain lion believed responsible for the nonfatal attack of a 63-year-old man camping near Nevada City.
The California Department of Fish and Game said the man was mauled early Sunday in his sleeping bag near the Yuba River.
The unidentified man, who was on a hiking trip, survived the attack with scratches and puncture wounds.
Authorities said the animal bit and clawed through the man's clothes and sleeping bag, then stopped and ran into the night.
Fish and game wardens verified the injuries and the attack after analyzing the man's clothing and sleeping bag. They also found mountain lion tracks and a dead domestic cat near the man's camp.
It is the 15th confirmed mountain lion attack in California since 1890.
MAN ARRESTED AFTER EXPLOSIVES DISCOVERED IN HOUSE: SACRAMENTO (AP) — Authorities are investigating why a Sacramento County man allegedly had malleable plastic explosives in his house.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said deputies found blocks of C-4, a clay-like explosive sometimes used by the U.S. military on buildings, in the garage of a home where they were responding to a family disturbance call Sunday night.
They arrested 27-year-old Marcus Kiplinger on suspicion of possession of a destructive device, possession of stolen property, possession of an illegal high-capacity weapon magazine and possession of a firearm silencer.
After evacuating neighbors and the home's other residents, the Sheriff's department's bomb squad determined the C-4 was not an immediate threat, but deputies also found materials in the house capable of detonating the explosive.
Kiplinger is being held in Sacramento County Jail on $500,000 bail.
BOY, 3, CRITICALLY INJURED BY PELLET GUN IN MERCED: MERCED (AP) — Authorities in Merced County say a 3-year-old boy has been critically injured after his 3-year-old cousin shot him in the eye with a pellet gun.
The boy was shot Saturday night after a family barbecue in Merced.
Authorities say older relatives had been shooting cans with the pellet gun, which was left loaded and unattended.
Sheriff's officials say a 3-year-old boy picked it up and fired it at his 3-year-old cousin. The pellet struck the other boy in the eye and lodged in his brain.
He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
LA DISTRICT ATTORNEY REVIEWING BRYSON INCIDENT: LOS ANGELES (AP) — Prosecutors on Monday said they are reviewing evidence to determine whether charges should be filed against former Commerce Secretary John Bryson who was involved in a trio of traffic accidents last month.
Evidence was presented by San Gabriel police to county prosecutors Monday, said Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office. She declined to comment further about the case.
Bryson resigned June 21 after suffering a seizure, saying he didn't want his health to be a distraction from his job. Authorities said Bryson struck a car stopped for a train twice and then rammed into another vehicle with his car a few minutes later. He was found unconscious in his vehicle.
Bryson was cited for felony hit-and run. It wasn't known if he had retained an attorney.
