STATE TESTS: 31 PCT OF CALIF. KIDS PHYSICALLY FIT: LOS ANGELES (AP) — State fitness tests administered to California's school-age children shows fewer than a third of tested students were in good physical shape.

The state Department of Education said Thursday that the 2012 Physical Fitness Test found 31 percent of 1.3 million fifth, seventh and ninth graders passed all six fitness measures. That percentage is about the same as 2011.

It also rated nearly 30 percent of children as having high health risks due to body fat.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson says the results reveal a tremendous public health challenge.

Kids were assessed for aerobic capacity, abdominal, trunk, and upper body strength, body composition and flexibility.

About 25 percent of fifth-graders passed all six tests, 32 percent of seventh-graders and 37 percent of ninth-graders.

3 CONVICTED IN SAN DIEGO CRAIGSLIST KILLING: SAN DIEGO (AP) — Three San Diego men have been convicted of robbing and killing a college student who answered a Craigslist ad.

A San Diego jury announced its verdict Thursday in the murder trial of Rashon Abernathy, Seandell Jones and Shaquille Jordan. Each could face about 50 years to life in prison.

Authorities say the three lured 18-year-old Garrett Berki to the Paradise Hills last year with a Craigslist ad offering a laptop computer.

Prosecutors say they snatched $600 from Berki and fled in a stolen car that Berki later spotted and chased.

Authorities say Berki was shot when his car cornered the other vehicle in a cul-de-sac.

Abernathy's attorney claimed the gun went off by accident.

Abernathy also was convicted of a similar Craigslist robbery that occurred a week before the shooting.

State health and safety officials say the fatal accident occurred at 9:43 a.m. Thursday at Super Link Plastic Inc. in Oakland. The name of the 34-year-old victim has not been released.

SALON WHERE SHOOTING RAMPAGE OCCURRED TO REOPEN: SEAL BEACH  (AP) — A Southern California hair salon is set to reopen this weekend more than a year after a shooting rampage left eight people dead.

Salon Meritage in Seal Beach will have its open house Sunday.

Prosecutors say a gunman sprayed the salon with bullets in October 2011 after arguing with his ex-wife over custody of their 8-year-old son. The woman, who was a stylist, and the salon owner were among the dead.

A stylist who stepped out for a break when the shooting occurred has become the salon's new owner. Irma Acosta says she has renovated the salon to create a safe place for customers. She said six stylists who worked in the old salon will be coming back.
