Oakland activists smash windows during protest
OAKLAND . (AP) — Oakland police say protesters upset that the city's gay pride festival charged admission went on a weekend vandalism spree, smashing windows at a Bank of America and spray-painting a police vehicle.
No arrests were made during Sunday's incident.
Police tell the Oakland Tribune that up to 60 marchers tried unsuccessfully to crash the gate of the Pride Festival in the Uptown District.
Police say some activists also smashed windows and ATMs at the nearby bank, sprayed an anarchist symbol on a police vehicle and painted slogans on several buildings, including "destroy capitalism."
The protest broke up after about an hour.
Youth soccer coach allegedly punched player
SIMI VALLEY . (AP) — A youth soccer coach in Ventura County has been arrested on suspicion of punching a 16-year-old player during a fight after a game.
Bart Allen, 47. was arrested Monday on suspicion of battery and corporal injury to a child.
Simi Valley police say a shoving match broke out Monday evening following a game between teams from the Conejo and Antelope valleys.
Police say witnesses reported that the Conejo Valley coach ran onto the field and began throwing punches. Police say a 16-year-old Antelope Valley player received a significant injury to his nose and cheek.
Police say Allen acknowledged throwing punches but denied hitting any players.
Man kills stepson over car damage
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Authorities say a 75-year-old man shot and killed his stepson during a fight over damage to a car.
San Diego police told the U-T San Diego that Thomas Bethel went to his stepson's Paradise Hills home Monday and confronted him about a car he owned that had been vandalized earlier in the day.
Investigators say the 54-year-old stepson apparently hit Bethel in the head with a crowbar before Bethel shot the stepson.
Officers say Bethel was booked into San Diego County Jail after being treated at a hospital for a traumatic head injury.
Salinas police use Taser on unruly football dad
SALINAS . (AP) — Salinas police used a stun gun to subdue a Salinas man who allegedly got into a confrontation with a coach at a youth football game and then turned belligerent when officers showed up to talk with him.
The Monterey County Herald reports that the officers used the Taser on 41-year-old David Ray Camel after he removed his shirt, balled up his fists in a fighting stance and refused to follow orders.
Camel was taken from the football game at North Salinas High School to a local hospital. The Herald quotes Salinas police as saying he was under the influence of alcohol and medication.
He was released on charges of resisting arrest and public intoxication.
