STOCKTON (AP) — Stockton police say an officer shot and killed a 45-year-old domestic violence suspect who refused to drop a bayonet.

The shooting occurred around 11 a.m. Sunday after officers stopped a vehicle of interest. Police say the suspect, Donald Haynes, was in the backseat and got out and confronted an approaching officer with a 19 ½ inch bayonet.

He allegedly refused orders to drop the bayonet, and an officer, identified as Robert Johnson III, fired at him three times. Haynes was struck at least once and died at a hospital.

Police say officers encountered Haynes attacking a woman at a home the previous night, but he was able to break free from them and escape.
