STOCKTON (AP) — A robbery suspect pulled over by two members of a gang task force in Stockton on Saturday night was shot and killed when the suspect tried to run them over, authorities said.

A Stockton police officer and a sheriff's deputy stopped the suspect around 9 p.m. because the silver Mercedes-Benz sedan with paper license plates he was driving matched the description of a car used in an armed robbery Friday, said San Joaquin County sheriff's Deputy Les Garcia, a spokesman for the department.

As the officer and deputy approached, the suspect put the car in reverse and tried to run at least one of them over, prompting both the officer and deputy to open fire, Garcia said.

When the suspect was taken out of the car, police found a loaded handgun in his waistband, officials said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The officer and the deputy were not hurt. They were placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated. Their names have not been released.

Investigators said the car the suspect was driving had been reported stolen last November in Roseville.
