YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK (AP) — A portion of Tioga Road impacted by a wildfire in Yosemite National Park will be closed beginning Wednesday while firefighters clear brush to slow the spread of the inferno.

Park officials expect the normally busy route will be closed through Labor Day Weekend.

Superintendent Don Neubacher says park officials decided to close the road that leads to the park’s eastern entrance to improve safety for firefighters.

Park officials are working to get control of a 280-square-mile wildfire burning along the park’s northern border.

Containment increased to 20 percent on Tuesday but the number of destroyed structures rose to 101. Some 4,500 structures remained threatened.

The fire started Aug. 17 in the Stanislaus National Forest and quickly spread into the park.
