Van drives straight into SF Bay

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Authorities say a minivan drove straight into San Francisco Bay and sank to the bottom, and dive teams searching for hours couldn't hadn't found the vehicle or driver.

San Francisco police and witnesses said the gold van with a woman inside drove over a curb and into the bay near San Francisco Marina Yacht Harbor at about 5 p.m. Friday.

Sailors from a civilian boat first tried to help the woman but were unable.

Police and fire department divers along with boats and helicopters from the U.S. Coast Guard searched for the van and the woman, with no immediate success.

Assistant Fire Chief Bob Postel tells the San Francisco Chronicle the van "could be anywhere" given the strength of the currents, and there was "zero chance" the driver survived.
