SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Officials say a woman is in critical condition after a large tree branch fell 50 feet and hit her on the head while she and her children were visiting a San Francisco park.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports the 36-year-old woman was hit by a 100-pound branch when she was at Washington Square park with her two small children Friday afternoon.

Fire Department Lt. Jonathan Baxter says paramedics rushed her to a hospital where she is in critical condition with a head injury.

The Department of Public Works sent an arborist to the park in the North Beach neighborhood to investigate why the branch gave way.

Mayor Edwin Lee said tree work is conducted regularly at the park and crews will examine all trees there.
