The be-taxing hour arrives at stroke of midnight

Those who have been procrastinating mailing their income tax returns up to the last minute will have to go to the Arch Road office after 5 p.m. That’s the time the post offices in Manteca, Lathrop and Ripon will close today.

After that, you’ll have to go the Arch Road mail center off Airport Way, but be sure to get there at 11:59 p.m. which is the last chance you have to get an April 15 date stamped on the envelope.

All post offices in Manteca, Lathrop and Ripon will run normal weekday business schedules today, said the spokespersons of all three locations who were contacted on Wednesday. Their lobbies will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

They all expect to be busier than normal today because of the tax-filing deadline. In fact, the long lines already started Wednesday even with all four customer windows open.

“We have been busy,” said the Manteca representative interviewed Wednesday.

But not as much in Lathrop, according to the spokesman interviewed on the phone.

There were “not a whole lot” of tax filers lining up in the lobby of the post office at Seventh Street, he said.

“But probably tomorrow we will be busy. We always are (on tax deadline day). It will be steady all day,” but not to the point where the lines will be up to the doorway, he added.

The spokeswoman reached at the Ripon post office noted the same thing. However, she commented that “the last two years have not been as busy because of people doing it online,” she commented.

“I’m not saying there are no long lines, but it has changed quite a bit” in recent years because of people choosing to file their taxes electronically, she said.

Postal representatives are also reminding the public that tax forms are not available at local post offices. They are directing people to go online at www.irs.gov and download the forms that they need, or call 1-800-829-1040.

There are two post offices in Manteca where tax filers can mail their completed tax forms: downtown at the corner of Center and Maple streets and the postal annex at 668 Industrial Park Drive in Manteca’s Industrial Park off South Main Street. The Ripon Post Office is located at 1275 W. Main Street. In Lathrop, the post office is at Seventh Street next to the Police Services building across from the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. The Airport/Arch Road postal annex is at 3131 Arch Road on the west side of Highway 99.
