Want to enjoy a good meal, help kids do better in school and have a firefighter at your beck and call?

Then join the Manteca Firefighters Local 1874 members for the Tip a Firefighter Night set for Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Applebee’s.

One hundred percent of the tips placed in firemen’s boots will benefit Give Every Child a Chance to provide free tutoring services to struggling kids.

Firefighters have a rich history of community involvement. Fire Captain David Britenbucher is a current director serving on the board.

The board chairman happens to be Manteca Police Chief Dave Bricker who is becoming a familiar face around restaurants himself with his coffee with the chief efforts on Saturdays.

Reopening city labor contracts
Various labor groups representing City of Manteca workers have been notified of the city’s intention to reopen contracts.

With between $2 million to $3 million to still bridge in terms of the city’s revenue shortfall, additional cuts are needed in the budget to either reduce or avoid layoffs.

The employee groups have already given up 3.8 percent that will be accomplished primarily during a series of concentrated furloughs during the holidays.

The workers already agreed to $1.2 million in wage concessions via furloughs that will occur for most workers the week of Thanksgiving and the week of Christmas when all non-essential city offices will be closed.
