The push is now underway to help make sure 1,300 struggling families in Manteca, Ripon, and Lathrop have a turkey or a ham on their Christmas table.

The Turkeys R Us effort has just over $2,000 toward the $12,500 they need to make sure that happens. Currently, they have enough funds to help 240 families served by 21 food closets in the three communities. They are short of money – or turkeys/hams – for 1,060 families.

Funds are needed by Dec. 16 so turkeys and hams can be secured and distributed through Second Harvest Food Bank to food closets in time for Christmas.

Community support enabled the food closets serving the needy have 1,300 turkeys to make sure no one went without at Thanksgiving in the three communities for the 12th consecutive year.

A number of people take the free turkeys they get for buying a set amount of food at supermarkets during the holidays and donate that to the effort.

Donations (make checks out to Turkeys R Us) can be dropped off at Coldwell Banker Crossroads offices at 319 Main Street near North Street in Manteca or 15810 S. Harlan Road in Lathrop or the Second Harvest Food Bank, 704 E. Industrial Park Drive in Manteca.

If you want to donate a frozen turkey or ham, take it directly to the food bank.
