Turkeys R Us still short turkeys for 300 families

Turkeys R Us needs another $2,800 by Friday to make sure the 1,300 struggling families in Manteca, Ripon, and Lathrop that they helped at Thanksgiving will also have a Christmas meal.

The turkey drive has received over $5,000 during the last six days according to Sue Teunissen who has been helping coordinate the effort for the past 12 years.

As of Wednesday, the effort was short having enough funds for 250 to 300 families depending on the price they are able to purchase hams or turkeys.

On Wednesday Second Harvest Food Bank - which purchases the turkeys and then distribute them to the 21 food closets serving the three communities – indicated they have been getting late requests for additional help with turkeys that they’ve had to turn down as it is doubtful they will be able to cover the request already made.

Funds are needed by Friday so turkeys and/or hams can be secured and distributed through Second Harvest Food Bank to the 21 food closets serving Manteca, Lathrop, and Ripon in time for Christmas.

A number of people take the free turkeys they get for buying a set amount of food at supermarkets during the holidays and donate that to the effort.

Donations (make checks out to Turkeys R Us) can be dropped off at Coldwell Banker Crossroads offices at 319 Main Street near North Street in Manteca or 15810 S. Harlan Road in Lathrop or the Second Harvest Food Bank, 704 E. Industrial Park Drive in Manteca.

If you want to donate a frozen turkey or ham, take it directly to the food bank.
