Hunger is a 24/7 problem.
That’s according to Mike Mallory, executive director of the Second Harvest Food Bank. With more need than ever to feed those in San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties – a sign of the troubled economy, he added – Mallory noticed the surplus dwindling at 704 E. Industrial Park Drive.
On Wednesday, his prayers were answered thanks to a generous donation by the Venture Club of Manteca.
The local nonprofit group, according to President Tammy Payan, recently held a fundraising golf tournament at Oakmoore golf course in Stockton, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Second Harvest.
All told, the Venture Club was able to give $2,000 to the food bank.
“(The money) will go to feeding the community,” Mallory said.
This includes the Food 4 Thought and the Senior Brown Bag programs.
Food 4 Thought supplies nutritional groceries to needy children participating in existing tutorial programs at local schools and community center.
The Senior Brown Bag is designed to deliver goods twice a month to low-income senior citizens.
