An anticipated break in storm systems Monday will allow volunteers to place and unfurl 2,400 flags to honor American presidents.
“The five-day forecast calls for clear weather so we’re going to go ahead and put the flags out,” noted Manteca Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Debby Moorhead.
Flags Over Manteca is the chamber’s signature community project. They do have teams lined up already to place and collect flags but they are short manpower to unload the truck before dawn and to place the flags back in at mid-afternoon. Moorhead said it also helps to have additional volunteers as often times groups show up shorthanded.
“We’ll have people help at the truck and if there is a group that needs help Les (Thomas) will direct them to that group,” Moorhead said.
Thomas has coordinated the distribution of the flags from the truck at the corner of Yosemite Avenue and Main Street since the effort started on Labor Day of 2002.
Flags Over Manteca was the chamber’s response to the 2001 terrorist attacks. They raised almost $60,000 to get the flag project in place to mark the first anniversary of those attacks which has now become known as Patriots Day. There are eight other days flags are placed out if weather permits. They are Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Patriots Day (Sept. 11) and Veterans Day.
Most of the flags go up along Main Street and Yosemite Avenue with dozens on Union Road and Louise Avenue near the East Union Cemetery as well as Center Street and Maple Avenue.
