What’s in the future for the Fourth of July celebration?

On Tuesday, Ripon City Council members will discuss just that as it relates to cost, funding sources, and issues that might need resolving in order to prepare for the 2014 fireworks event.

Mayor Dean Uecker is scheduled to provide the report during the 7 p.m. open session in the Council Chambers, 259 N. Wilma Ave.

He and Elden ‘Red’ Nutt serve on the Fireworks Committee and were among the catalysts for bringing the pyrotechnic display back to Ripon High’s Stouffer Field some three years ago.

Prior to that, the Fourth of July celebration was held across town at the Mistlin Sports Complex.

Among the concerns was the decreased number of donors.

Nutt recently reported that in 2011, the first year back at the Ripon High site, 344 donors made possible the Independence Day event along downtown.

Those numbers dipped to 209 donors in 2012.

This past year, donations were at 104 including one major contributor to make possible the Fourth of July show, according to Nutt.

The future of the fireworks show continuing at the RHS for next year, especially with modernization taking place at the RHS stadium, was also up in the air.

Nutt had applauded the turnout for the fireworks show coupled with the downtown morning parade consisting of non-motorized vehicles in his earlier report.

Other agenda items include:

• Receiving the progress payment of $188,412 to O.C. Jones and Sons, Inc. for work the Mistlin Sports Complex’s softball fields.

• Accepting the completed work by Knife River Construction on the Colony Road Overlay Project.

•  Approving the ordinance regarding drug paraphernalia to comply with changes to the California State Law.

• Adopting a policy to maintain an appropriate staffing level for public safety, increasing those levels when the budget allows, and encouraging increased levels in the County of San Joaquin.
