Whos scariest of them all?
Many employees going to work in Halloween costumes

It may be furlough Friday for many government offices. Their loss. But for many employees in private businesses who don’t have the mandatory day off to save the budget, today is come-to-work-as-scary-or-nice-as-you-dare-to-be.

“We’ve been allowed to dress up to work Friday (today), Saturday and Sunday,” said an excited Carrie Even, a supervisor at the Kmart store on Northgate and North Main Street in Manteca.

It will be the same scenario at Goodwill today and this weekend. Customers at the thrift store located in the Save Mart shopping center on West Yosemite Avenue will be greeted by employees appearing in their favorite dress-up aliases.

And if you are one of the many busy people who have run out of time or were just simply too lazy to squeeze your creative juices to put together an outfit you won’t be scared to show off to friends, there are still plenty of last pickings left at many area stores including Kmart.

“We’re pretty picked over right now,” said Even Thursday, but only as far as this year’s new Halloween costume choices are concerned.

But perhaps being a procrastinator is a good thing, too, in this particular case.

“Everything’s 50 percent off,” on all of the store’s Halloween costumes, Even said.

Even though costume-shopping was going down to the wire Thursday, “Oh, absolutely, it’s still crazy over here,” she said of the customer traffic at Kmart.

“Last year was the same way; people were shopping for costumes way down to the last day,” she said.

It was just as hectic Thursday at Goodwill store, with one of the supervisors who barely had time to give her name – Jessica – but was able to talk quickly enough to say a short comment while attending to a long line of customers.

“We’re selling a lot of costumes, mostly kids’ stuff,” said a multi-tasking Jessica without skipping a beat.

At Alluring Treasures, Manteca’s newest thrift, consignment and antiques outlet on North Union Road, owner Matt Lewis said their Halloween shopping crowd peaked this week.

It started slowly at the first of the month and then went crazy as the week started with their customers “mostly adults and a lot of teen-agers” from age 13, he said.

“We’ve been busier than we thought,” he said, and expects to “get a good rush” today and Saturday.

Many of the customers who were not that lucky to snag one of their costumes instead found other things in the store that they will incorporate into their custom-made costumes, Lewis said.

“We’re selling stuff we’ve had for a while, and a lot of stuff that we didn’t think will sell.  We’ve sold a lot of baskets and containers,” he said.

“It’s been pretty interesting,” he concluded with a laugh.
