Woodworker seeks people interested in helping paint wooden toys for needy kids

Recently I saw an article in one of the local papers showing some young people painting blocks of wood that had the appearance of cars or trucks. It indicated that they were making them to send to children in China.

For more than two decades I have been making what is referred to as “layered animals,” and gave them to my grandchildren to paint. Now they are all grown and have families of their own and live far away. Even though I have 32 great grandchildren, they too are mostly far away. Currently I make the toys for neighborhood children and friends. There are more than 80 patterns of all types of animals and birds in my collection. I am in my mid 80s but am able to make these toys and enjoy doing it. It is good therapy.

I wonder if there are any local groups that would be interested in painting these toys for needy children. I am not interested in selling them but if many would be needed, help to pay for the lumber would be appreciated. Most everything is made of 1 inch pine. Hardwood is too difficult to work with and become expensive.

If you have any suggestions of some organization wanting to do something of this nature, I will be happy to make the toys.
