Workshop Thursday on affordable housing issues

Developing Manteca’s strategies for encouraging affordable housing is the end goal of a workshop this Thursday.

The Community Development Department is conducting a meeting from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Manteca Senior Center, 295 Cherry Lane, to collect comments about what Manteca needs to do to purse affordable housing as well as identifying obstacles.

It is all part of updating the state-required housing element for the city’s general plan that serves as the blueprint for municipal growth.

The City Council had appointed a committee to explore workforce housing strategies several years ago but shelved the recommendations after the foreclosure mess started driving down prices and increasing housing affordability for a large chunk of city residents.

Nothing has been donewith those recommendations that also delineated problems in the path of any effort to put in place affordable housing in Manteca.

The workshop will provide a brief overview of the housing element update process and discuss the major challenges to affordable housing in Manteca.

Participants will be asked to answer the following questions:

• What are the top three housing issues that should be addressed?

• What are the top three barriers to affordable housing in Manteca?

• What needs to be done to increase the amount of affordable housing in Manteca?

• What are the existing opportunities available to meet the affordable housing needs of Manteca residents?
