Antonio Gonzalez passed away suddenly January 4, at the age of 94. A resident of Manteca for more than 60 years, he was known in the community for his dedication to teaching the gospel to countless area residents.

He was born in Arizona and lived in Mexico for many years. During his time in Mexico, he was a wrestler, boxer and a bus driver. Antonio finally retired after 40 years as an owner operator hauling goods all over California.  Known as Tony to many co-workers and friends, he had a deep love of animals and was a horseman in his younger years. He participated in many Mexican rodeos (charreadas) and parades with his horse, Palomo, in the 1960s and 70s. He was adept at lariat spinning and his rope tricks included jumping through the spinning rope. He also enjoyed singing and playing the guitar.

Antonio and his wife of 70 years, Margarita, were among the founders of the Mexican American Catholic Organization in the early 1970s. The couple was involved for many years with St. Anthony's Catholic Church and with Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Lathrop. In addition, Antonio and his wife were heavily involved with many spiritual retreats and spent many years guiding couples with pre-marital counseling.

He is survived by his wife, Margarita, their children, Andres of Manteca, Blanca (Craig) of San Diego, and Jose Antonio (Coleen) of Roseville; six grandchildren, Damian, Veronica, Samuel, Sarah, Gabriel and Alexander; and a great-grandchild, Mirabella. He is also survived by three sisters, Trini, Estefana and Rosario of Mexico.

The family of Antonio Gonzalez is entrusting P.L. Fry and Son Chapel for all arrangements. For direct condolences to the family, visit his online tribute page at
