Carol Sue Mackey, 76, entered into eternal rest on April 26, 2010 in Modesto, California.  She was born on August 3, 1933 in Marshall, Arkansas, to the late McKinley and Alva (Griffith) O’Neal.

Mrs. Mackey was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 51 years, Wayne Mackey, and her older brothers Grant, Bryce, and Bruce O’Neal.  She is survived by her sister Mary (John) Grindy of Lincoln, California, and her children Ava (Mike) Cole of Longview, Washington, Glenn (Cindy) Mackey of O’Fallon, Illinois, Lenn (Donna) Mackey of Manteca, California, Ben Mackey of Ripon, California, and Ken (Deborah) Mackey of Ione, California.  She was a loving grandmother to Christy, Tammy, Kelly, Phillip, Allen, Juliana, Scott, Ryan, Jordan, Callessa, Chance, and Kenny, and great-grandmother to Zoey.  She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Doris (Grant) O’Neal of Marshall, Arkansas, Lucille (Bryce) O’Neal of West Chester, Pennsylvania, and Joyce (Bruce) O’Neal of Jackson, California, and her very loving friend, Arno Hansen of Ione.

Carol and Wayne moved to the Ione area from Arkansas in 1955.  During her years in Ione, Carol was active with the Girl Scouts, the Cub Scouts, and the Boy Scouts, and was presented the Silver Bear Award by the Boy Scouts, the highest award given to volunteer leaders.  Carol worked for many years as the secretary of the Ione Planning Commission, was a librarian and teacher’s aide at Ione Elementary School, was a Red Cross CPR instructor, and was the first female fire fighter for the City of Ione Fire Department.  She was a member of the Ione Free Methodist Church, and later the Ione Community United Methodist Church.  She was an active member of the VFW Auxiliary and a Past Worthy Matron for Ione Chapter #283 of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving several terms from 1978-98.

Carol was an expert seamstress and made numerous beautiful quilts.  She loved her pets, and she loved to help other people, always volunteering to do whatever she could for those who needed care.  In 1983, she and Wayne were recognized by the city of Ione as Family of the Year.  They loved to travel and belonged to several travel clubs.

Mrs. Mackey’s visitation will be Saturday, May 1, 2010 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Daneri Mortuary, Jackson, California, followed by the service at 11 a.m., officiated by Pastor Chuck Roots, Free Methodist Church of Ripon.  Family burial services at Sunset View Cemetery in Martell will be held at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions to the American Red Cross, the ASPCA, the Humane Society of the United States, the American Stroke Association, the City of Ione Fire Department, or any charity of choice.
