April 30, 1950 – November 11, 2022
Cat Martinez

Mary Catherine Martinez (nee Doherty) passed away peacefully on November 11, 2022, surrounded by family at her home in Manteca, Calif. The cause of death was ovarian cancer, which she had lived with for four years.    Cathy was 72 years old and had lived in Stockton and Manteca for more than 35 years combined.  Cathy was a dedicated and reliable worker for her entire adult life.  From 1987 until her retirement in 2012, she worked in administrative positions in several departments of the

University of the Pacific, including in the School of International Studies and in Student Services.  Cathy also was a longtime member of the Stockton Chorale and twice performed with the

chorale at Carnegie Hall. For several years, even during her illness when able, Cathy was active in the Democratic Club of Manteca, serving in leadership positions.

Cathy was the adored wife of Jose (Joe) Martinez. They met at the UOP campus, where Cathy worked and Joe was enrolled as a student, they were married in 2002 at UOP’s Morris Chapel.

Cathy and Joe served together as lectors at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Manteca and spent many years educating children and adults as they prepared for Catholic sacraments.

They were avid fans of both the Giants and the A’s baseball teams and enjoyed sightseeing trips and family visits throughout Northern California. Joe rarely left her side during her illness and

cared for her lovingly during her last days.

Cathy was the beloved and devoted mother of Shaun Tanner of Manteca and Megan Jones of Vancouver, Wash. She was stepmother of Adrien, Nikkos, Elias and Theresa Martinez, and was dearly loved Nana to Johnny “JJ”, Donovan, Darrian, Isaiah, Bradley and Alexis.

Cathy was born in San Francisco, the first of seven children of John Bernard Doherty and Cecelia Margaret (Peggy) Doherty. The family soon moved to Alameda, where Cathy attended St. Joseph’s School and Alameda High School (Class of 1968). Cathy is survived and dearly missed by her mother and her sisters Patricia Cole (John), Barbara Doherty (Ron Carver) and Chris Close (Paul), brothers, James Doherty (Barbara), William Doherty (Jennifer) and John Doherty (Colleen). Her uncle, John Brodie, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, also survive her.
