Cornel James Weststeyn passed away peacefully on December 9, 2020 in Lafayette, CA at the age of 57 after a short battle with cancer. Cornel was born on June 8, 1963 in Manteca, California to parents Jake and Elisabeth Weststeyn. Cornel has been a life long resident of Ripon/Manteca.
Cornel attended Ripon Christian Schools and graduated with the class of 1981. Cornel graduated from Fresno State in 1988 with a degree in agriculture and business. He was a farmer in the Ripon area for almost 40 years, working on the family farm and for several local farmers, the latest being Boersema Farms. He was a quiet person but fiercely loyal and hardworking. Cutting and delivering firewood to many families in the area filled his time when he was not working his regular job. His favorite pastime was fishing with his friend Mike Carlson and others. Cornel was very fond of his dog and enjoyed walks with her out in the orchard. Our family is very thankful for Cornel’s unselfish provision of care to our Dad, Jake Weststeyn, before Dad passed away in May of this year. Cornel did not fear death as he knew he was heading into the arms of Jesus. Cornel was greatly loved and will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and co-workers.
Cornel leaves behind his mother, Elisabeth Weststeyn and his sisters, Lisa Van Wyk (Doug), Mary Louise Vander Meulen (John) and Marcia Bomgaars.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Deegan Funeral Chapels. Visitation for Cornel is scheduled for Tuesday, December 29, from 12 to 2 p.m. at Deegan Ripon Memorial Chapel, followed by a graveside at Ripon Cemetery at 2:15 p.m. COVID restrictions in place, please call the funeral home for further information.
