Gertie Schaapman was born in Ripon, California, on April 25, 1925, to Gerrit and Sadie Schaapman.

She was the second of five daughters.  She graduated from Ripon High School in 1943.  After high school, she worked at Tracy Defense Depot for eight years.  In 1951, she moved to Chicago by train.  In 1991, she retired from Duff & Phelps, a financial advisory firm in Chicago, after working there for over 30 years.  In March of this year, Gertie moved to Ripon to be near her family.

She was an active member of the Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chicago.  She was on the altar guild, secretary for the board, and volunteered in the school.  She was involved in community activities, including concerts, symphonies, and the Neighborhood Watch program.  Gertie had a servant’s heart, always willing to help others. She did grocery shopping for shut-ins, drove friends to doctor appointments and church services, and made meals for the sick.

Gertie went to be with the Lord on July 24, 2010.  She will be remembered as a loving sister, aunt, and friend, who had a generous spirit and a love of life. She is survived by her sisters, Johanna Johansen of Modesto, Clara (Andy) Brouwer of Ripon, brother-in-law Core De Jong of Ripon, and many nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.

Her visitation will be on Friday, July 30, from 2-5 p.m. at Deegan Ripon Memorial Chapel.  Her graveside service will be on Saturday, July 31, at 10 a.m. at Ripon Cemetery with her Memorial service following at 11 a.m. at Almond Valley Christian Reformed Church in Ripon.  Remembrances can be made to Ripon Christian Schools, 435 N. Maple, Ripon, CA 95366, or Community Hospice, Inc., 4368 Spyres Way, Modesto, CA  95356.  Arrangements by Deegan Ripon Memorial Chapel with an online guest registry available at www.deeganfuneralchapels.com
