Joe den Hollander, 86, passed away August 29, 2021 at home with his family.  He was born January 6, 1935 in Badhoevedorp, The Netherlands.   As a 19 and 20 year old, Joe was in the Dutch military,  He courted his wife, Eidie, and eventually they married (June 25) then emigrated to Ripon, CA in 1959.  In 1961, daughter Carla (Spyksma) was born, and in 1962, another daughter Anita (Whitehead) was born.
Joe worked in Ripon for N&S for 2 years, then worked at Simpson Paper for 31 years.  He finished his career at Simpson as a Supervisor of Finishing, retiring early at age 59.  When not working, Joe enjoyed playing soccer and tennis, as well as coaching and watching sports (mainly soccer and the Giants).  He was proud to have started the recreational soccer league in Ripon in 1978, serving as the first league director.  Joe and Eidie enjoyed playing cards with friends, as well.
During retirement, he volunteered with the Red Cross, the Ripon Arts League and coached soccer.  Many soccer players from Ripon can testify to Joe coaching from the sidelines.  Fishing became a new passion, evidenced by the “official” fish pictures in the garage.
He is survived by his wife, Eidie, daughters Carla (Glenn) Spyksma, and Anita Whitehead. His grandchildren are Natasha Spyksma, Alex Spyksma, Robert Whitehead, Maryka (Andrew) Becher, Kyle (Silvia) Whitehead, Tessa (Josh) Camara, and Shane (Erica) Whitehead.  Joe also leaves behind 6 great grandchildren.
Joe will be remembered as honest, generous, fair, loving and having a playful nature.  He loved to tease people, and usually had a wisecrack to add to the conversation.   Often he would tell stories about his life, including his childhood experiences during World War II, to his children and grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Joann Ziesel, SanDee VanNoy and the Community Hospice staff for their excellent care of Joe during his last days.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, September 3, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Deegan Ripon Memorial Chapel, 111 S.
