   Joseph F. Madden, 91 of Freeport, IL passed away September 13, 2014 at Liberty Village in Freeport.  Born January 14, 1923 in Bronx, NY, son of Thornas and Bridget Madden.
 He received his Doctor of Education from New York University and became a community recreation director for Hicksville and Roslyn, New York school districts and a professor of Recreation at Appalachian State University, North Carolina.
   He served his country during WWII as a radio operator over Germany in the Army Air Corps between 1942 and 1945.
   He survived by his first wife, Mary Madden of N.Y., N.Y., children; Theresa (Joseph) Best of Freeport, IL, Paula (Thomas)
 Mulhearn of Astana, Kazakhstan, Daniel {Tina) Madden of Manteca, CA and sister; Mary (Kevin) McManus of Glenview, IL, grandchildren;  Rory Best of Indianapolis, IN; Molly (James) Russell, Vevey, Switzerland; Thomas Mulhearn, Essex Junction, VT; Mary Mulhearn, Jefferson City, MO; Matthew (Stephanie) Madden, Cortland, NY; Bridgette Madden, San Francisco, CA; Natalie (Joseph) Rosenberger, Manteca, CA.  He is survived by seven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
   Joseph was proceeded in death by his parents, brothers, Thomas and Francis, son, Joseph P. Madden, grandson
Brian Mulhearn, and second wife, Rosemary Walsh Madden.
A military funeral will be held October 28, 2014 at 11a.m. at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL. Memorial donations may be made to the WoundedWarriorProject.org.
