Joseph Walter Fassler passed away peacefully at his home on July 27, 2022 at age 98. He was born in San Jose, California, on October 7, 1923 to Joseph Fassler and Louise Market Fassler. The family owned a dairy in San Jose, but moved back to Switzerland when Joe was about nine years old. They returned a year later to the United States and San Jose, and he lived there through his young adult years. He worked at other jobs besides the family dairy, and fondly remembered his days as a soda jerk when he was in high school. Until just a few months ago, he loved to treat family and friends that dropped by with a correctly made root beer float.
Joe joined the Army in 1944 and spent most of his World War II service time in Korea. He was regarded there as a friendly soldier who was kind and generous with his time and resources. He returned to California from the service in 1946. Joe was a fun-loving man who loved to dance, and he visited all the Swiss Clubs in the area with his friend, Fred Holdener. He also learned to pilot a small airplane. He met Pauline Betschart at the San Joaquin Valley Swiss Club, and he knew right away that she was the girl for him. Her family told stories about how he would fly up from San Jose to spend time with Pauline. They met in 1948 and married on November 5, 1949. Their family grew, and they raised four children on the ranch that would be his home for the rest of his life. Their love story was truly remarkable. He cherished Pauline, and committed to caring for her until she passed in April of 2021.
Joe is survived by three sons, one daughter, ten grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. He loved his wife and family with all his heart. He chose to be self-employed so they could spend more time together, and all their activities were shared. The children and grandchildren fondly remember time spent with him going fishing, hunting, horse packing in the mountains, water skiing and working on the farm, gathering eggs and working in the almond and fruit orchards.
Joe was preceded in death by Pauline, his wife of 71 years; his parents, Joseph Fassler and Louise Fassler Clausen, and one sister, Hedy Robbins. There are tears here on earth as he leaves us, but rejoicing and dancing in heaven as he is reunited with his family.
