La Verne D. Perea “Nan” mother, grandmother, godmother, entered into rest peacefully on December 4, 2015 at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson, CA after her long battle with liver cancer, at the age of 77.
   La Verne was born in Chicago, IL on October 11, 1938, to Richard and Sophie Spies. Losing her parents at a young age of 13, she moved to Southern California to be raised by her mother’s family and where she raised her four children while enjoying her 27 year career at Western Union. She began her career as a telex operator while moving up the ranks to an Operations Division Manager. She moved to Manteca, CA in 2001 where she remained for the rest of her life.
   La Verne was known for her ease in frequent conversation with even total strangers. She possessed a contagious smile and entertaining sense of humor. Throughout her life, despite life’s obstacles, she maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many. She was always the first to offer her heart and home to those that needed help. Her signature gift of joy, shown through her constant smiling, laughter and joking around, will never be forgotten.
   She is survived by her four children, son Ben Perea
(Jane Clemmer ) of Gamaliel, KY, daughter, Sharilyn Perea of San Ramon, CA, daughter Doreen Ellis (Andrew Ellis) of Tracy, CA., daughter Gena Johnson of Manteca, CA. eight grandchildren, Alexis Perea, Taylor Johnson, Alyssa Ellis, Sophie Perea, Maverick Clemmer, Isabella Ellis, Zachary Johnson, Mason Johnson. Brother, Richard Spies (Kimiko Spies) niece, Vivian Spies, goddaughter, Melissa Martinez. “Nan” will be remembered for her wit and generosity, as well as her decorated house during the Christmas season.
   The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers and support and acknowledge the extraordinary care given by the staff at Alexander Cohen Hospice House. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations made to Community Hospice.
   A celebration of life memorial will take place on January 30, 2016 at the Azusa Woman’s Club, 1003 N. Azusa Ave., Azusa, CA, 91702 from 1-5 pm.
