Lorene A. Smith, 79 was born in Newman-Gustine (CA) on October 2, 1942 and passed away in Manteca on October 25. A Manteca resident from the age of 10, she married G. Scott Smith her cowboy, general contractor and the love of her life in November 1964 after a blind date in January of that year. During 57 years of marriage they raised three children, ran a home construction and rental business and had lots of fun.
Lorene had many interests and accomplishments. She enjoyed being a 4-H mom and grammy (sheep, pigs, steers and horse projects), a band mom (flute and trumpet) and a horse show mom. The family showed Arabian horses across Northern California. She showed horses herself along with training and competing in 50-mile endurance rides, with several top 10 finishes. She enjoyed trail rides, camping, trips in the RV, skiing, working out at the gym and aerobics classes. One of her greatest roles was being Grammy to her three grandchildren. She never missed an event and was very proud of each of them.
Lorene loved country living in the home she and Scott built in the mid 1970s to raise their family. It was where they trained their horses and the hub for their children and grandchildren’s 4-H projects along with friends who boarded their horses. She got such joy from looking out the large windows to see the barn, pasture, horses, chickens and various 4-H animals.
She loved animals and had several dogs and cats over the years. She once hand-fed a fledgling bird until it grew feathers and flew away.
As a 1961 graduate of Manteca High School, she was an active member of the class reunion planning committee and enjoyed friendships with her classmates. Her Christian faith was an important part of her life and she was an active member of the Church of Christ in Lathrop.
Lorene’s family describes her as loving, devoted, outgoing and friendly with a beautiful smile and gorgeous silver hair. She was also highly organized and made the best deviled eggs and lemon meringue pie.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be missed. She was preceded in death by her parents Irvine and Blanche Willson and her son Scott A. Smith (in August). She leaves behind her husband G. Scott Smith and two daughters, Kelly Scott (Steve Powers) of Copperopolis, Kristy Bean (Jeff) of Manteca, and their children, Kyle Bean (Ashley), Brandon and Katelin. She is also survived by her brother Irvine Willson (Lynne) of Lathrop and her niece Robyn Mendoza (Larry) of Manteca and her nephew Steve Willson (Rebecca).
