Lori Barrera bw

Lori Lynn Barrera, age 55, passed away peacefully on September 24th, 2015 surrounded by her family in her home after a long battle with cancer. Lori was born on December 18th, 1959 in Rancho Cordova, California to the late Bob Dockham and Bo Silvis.
Lori is survived by her mother Bo Silvis; her loving husband of 35 years, Max Barrera; siblings David Dockham and Cheryl Fischietto; children Jenny (Sean) Burgess and Steve (Celina) Barrera; granddaughter Ava and Mia Barrera and Elle and Victoria Burgess; as well as many other relatives and close friends.
Lori worked as a 911 dispatcher for the Manteca Police Department before deciding to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher. She graduated from California State University Stanislaus with a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies. She worked as a 1st grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School for 15 years.
Children lifted Lori’s spirits and she was a devoted mother and grandmother. Although she retired to spend more time with her family during her battle with cancer, her passion for helping children continued to live in her. She volunteered at Veritas and Lincoln Elementary schools and also mentored her daughter-in-law Celina as she entered the teaching profession.
Lori enjoyed traveling the United States and being outdoors with her husband and family. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren- baking, going to the park and attending their sports events and activities. Lori liked to read and going to different restaurants to try different types of foods.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, October 3rd, 2015 at 1pm at Green Valley Mortuary and Cemetery, located at 3004 Alexandrite Road, Rescue, CA 95672.  A donation can be made in Lori’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research (www.stjudes.org) or The American Cancer Society (www.cancerresearch.org)  in lieu of flowers, which are also welcome.
