On August 16, 2014, just hours before her 90th birthday, Mabel Gretchen passed away at her home, nestled in the family almond orchard, on the outskirts of Manteca.
Mabel was born on August 17, 1924, in Lodi, to Edward and Karen Fuller. She grew up in Stockton. When World War II broke out, she became one of the first of the women’s Marine Corp. She served as an airplane mechanic at a large base in Georgia. After the war, she met and married Peter Gretchen.
They lived in Stockton where their two children, Gene and Sylvia, were born. Mabel became an accomplished gourmet cook and her family was regularly served meals that would have made a four-star restaurateur happy. In the 1950’s the family built a home on the Gretchen family farm in Manteca where they have lived ever since.
Mabel returned to school once her children were grown and graduated from college in the 1970’s. Her love of history and anthropology stayed with her throughout her life. A skilled and innovative horticulturist, her garden was filled with rare plants. Mabel is survived by her husband, her two children, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be private.
