Mario Sarina
September 26, 1936-January 7, 2016
Mario Sarina

Mario Sarina, 79, passed away on January 7, 2016 in Manteca. He was born September 26, 1936 in Manteca to the late Peter and Mary Sarina and was preceded in death by his brother, Delfino, and sister, Josephine.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Vivian Sarina, his daughter, Amy Johnston, her husband Anthony, of Modesto, and his two grandsons, Finn and Lincoln Johnston. Mario has two surviving siblings, William Sarina of Manteca and Frances Lober of Monterey.
Mario was a lifetime Manteca resident. He served in the U.S. Army in 1955-56, giving him an opportunity to see Japan and Korea.
Mario and Vivian loved to travel. His father and mother were born in Switzerland before settling down and operating a dairy on French Camp Road in Manteca. The highlight of all his travels was getting to know his aunts, uncles and cousins in Switzerland on their trips to Europe.
Mario’s love for gardening and the outdoors led him to study landscaping at Modesto Junior College after his honorable discharge from the Army.
Mario retired as landscape supervisor from California Youth Authority in September 1995 at the age of 59. To stay active, he joined a senior softball team called the Modesto Eagles. Over the years his team traveled to softball tournaments throughout California. The highlight of his softball days was participating in annual tournaments at the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah where his team proudly won a bronze, silver and gold medal award over a 10 year span.
From cooking the family meals, often based on recipes from his proud Swiss heritage, to readily lending a helping hand wherever needed, Mario’s devotion to his family was unwavering.
P.L. Fry is honored to serve the Sarina family. A Chapel service will be held in his honor on Friday, January 15, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at P.L. Fry and Son Funeral Home, 290 North Union Road, Manteca, CA. He will be laid to rest privately.
