Richard Joseph McMullen passed away peacefully on Friday, November 13, 2020 with his family at his bedside.
Richard grew up in Manhattan Beach, California attending Junipero Serra High School where he met and married his high school sweetheart Karen of 52 years. Rich was an amazing and loving father and grandpa to his children and grandchildren, Richard McMullen Jr., Briga Voigt, Louis and Finn, Georgette, Mike, Kendra and Brooklyn Cahill, Jennifer McMullen, and Jamie, Ryan, Easton and Wilson Gutierrez. Rich was a brotherly role model to his surviving brothers Bill and Tom.
Rich served in the U.S. Air Force and was a proud Vietnam Veteran serving tours in both Europe and Asia for our county. His work as an electronic technician took him to several U.S. cities in California, Arizona, and Texas.
Rich was passionate about music having taught himself drums in his late teens, and later in life again teaching himself to play both the guitar and banjo. He had his own band in high school, “The Rum Runners.” Music was woven throughout his life jamming with friends and family, as well as playing in church services. He was an avid baseball fan, a student of the game playing primarily catcher as a youngster in little league and in later years in several military and church leagues. He also coached little league teams for his son and daughters. He enjoyed fishing and camping trips throughout the years with his family.
Rich will be truly missed by the many individuals his life touched, but solace can be taken in knowing he is catching for angels in heaven and lending his musical talents to the Lords heavenly ensemble.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Hungry for Music at www.hungryformusic.org to pass along his love of music to the next generation.
