Robert Avon Comden
Retired teacher/U.S. Navy veteran

riday, May 21, 2010 at his home with his wife and daughter by his side. He was born on May 14, 1944 in Edmore, Michigan and he grew up in Canton, Ohio. After graduating from high school, Robert proudly served in the U.S. Navy on the Admiral’s Flag Ship the U.S.S. La Salle from 1963-1967.

Robert moved to Manteca in 1971. Besides owning a gas station, he worked jobs in construction and painting. He attended California State University, Stanislaus and graduated in 1979 with a BA in education. Robert found his true calling as a school teacher. He taught kindergarten and fourth grade for 23 years at Shasta Elementary School in Manteca and retired from teaching in 2002. Many of his students will remember Mr. Comden who always had a hanky in his back pocket and a stash of gummy worms or Jelly Ranchers on his desk. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, white water rafting, friends and family. He collected coins, poker chips, bandanas, and Hard Rock Cafe T-shirts.

Robert is survived by his wife of 34 years, Kathy; three children, Robert Comden Jr. and wife Jody of Florida, Jennifer Pajek and husband Dariusz of New Jersey, and Katie Allen and husband Jeremiah of Manteca. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Bill Noyes of Manteca, and sister, Gay Thompson of Oregon; nieces and nephews, Amy and Christopher “Sam” Noyes, Gillian Garrett, Brenda and Dan Porter, Jeanette and Brad Thompson; and five granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his sister Phyllis Comden Noyes of Manteca and his parents Mr. & Mrs. Bill Comden of Manteca.

Robert and his wonderful sense of humor will be sadly missed by all of his friends and family. At Robert’s request, services will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Hospice of San Joaquin, 3888 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, CA 95204.
