Thomas Michael Logan of Oakland, CA died March 23 from complications following surgery for double aneurysms. He was 70 years old.
Mike was born July 23, 1941 in Stockton, CA to Richard and Virginia Logan. Known to most people as Mike or Logan, he was a wonderful husband, friend, golfer, and old movie buff and sports fan extraordinaire. He had a heart and personality as big as you can imagine!
The Logan family moved to the Bay Area in 1951 and Mike lived most of his life in Alameda and Oakland. A graduate of Encinal High School, Class of 1959, Mike joined the U.S. Marines that year and served until 1963. He served on several Navy vessels, including the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany. The “Mighty O” was Mike’s favorite military assignment.
While in the Marines, Mike also learned to play the game of golf, and became an avid lifetime player, fan and student of the game. He was well-known as “Doc Logan” around the Check Corica golf complex in Alameda, where he played for almost 50 years and marshalled for about 15, retiring as head marshall about 2009. He truly loved the game and the people he played with. His “extended foursome” at Alameda GC included Don Pitcock, Jose Cerda, Dave Skolnick, Charlie Nagamoto, Ed Gregory and Ron Trentler, and they played regularly each Monday and Thursday for years. He and his wife, Sara, honeymooned on the golf courses around Monterey, and returned there often to celebrate many of their 37 anniversaries.
Mike worked as a lab tech, operating engineer and shift supervisor during his business career, first with Shell Development in Emeryville in the 1960s, and then with companies including Zoecon Corporation/Occidental Petroleum/Sandoz Crop Protection in East Palo Alto, and Pacific Oxygen Company in Oakland in the 1970s to 1990s.
Mike met his second wife, Sara, at Zoecon in the early 1970s, and they were married for 37 wonderful years. Recent trips together to Norway and Hawaii were especially memorable.Besides Sara, Mike is survived by his sister, Sharon Mularski (husband Mike), of Reno, NV, four nieces and a nephew, and numerous grand and great grand nephews and nieces; Sharon’s daughter, Sheryl Ann Terry, lived with Sara and Mike for several years in the 1970s. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Lisa Soder of Napa CA and Kay Soder- Alderfer (husband David) of Downers, Grove IL; and his brother-in-law Tom Soder (wife Leigh Ann and son Erik) of Savannah, GA. The family of Ted and Becky Baer of Palo Alto, CA were especially close members of Mike and Sara’s extended Bay Area family. Mike also had two children Kimberly Ann and Michael David Richard Logan from a prior marriage to Virginia Montgomery Logan; these family members are now living in Southern California.
