Editor, Manteca Bulletin,
An open letter to Congressman Jerry McNerney:

As the votes flashed on the screen in that historic morning of March 22, I watched with excitement and trepidation. What if those members who committed to supporting this bill changed their mind at the last minute? Minutes ticking by seem to do so ever so slowly.  When the countdown reached zero and the final tally indicated that the bill was passed, I cried. I ran around the house hollering, “Yes, we can! Thank God!”  I never thought watching C-Span can be this exciting and emotional. It was like the Presidential elections of 2008 all over again. I am so proud of you for supporting this reform despite threats, negative ad campaigns from the right wing backed by the insurance companies and anger from the public who has been misled.

The passage of this law means so much to me and so many others. Not only does this mean freedom from fear of losing coverage, relief from rising premiums but most important of all, it restored my belief in a government that works for its people. I know now that the voice of the people (and one of them was mine) are being heard and that America once again proved that we are a country that cares for the underprivileged. A century of hopes for this monumental undertaking finally came to this. I am so glad that I am here to witness it. For sure, this is what our generation will be remembered for.

Please know that we are praying for you and your family’s safety and all members of the congress and their families. Now that you have tasted a resounding victory, let’s embark on a new issue: Immigration Reform.

Again, thank you for your hard work, courage and steadfastness. Enjoy your holiday. God bless.
