A proud family tradition serving America

Thursday I got to do something with my son, Johnny, that he and I have been talking about for years.  I got to go to the Sacramento Enlistment Service desk and be a part of Johnny’s induction into the U.S. Army.

It was a very solemn ceremony performed by an Army officer and 6 young men and women.  He thanked me for my previous service then he thanked each one of them for volunteering for this enlistment.  I know that Johnny took it very seriously and so did I.  Goodness, my little boy (now standing at 6-foot-2) is in the Army National Guard.  This is the same branch my father made a career of and that I served in for over 5 years until my diabetes took me out.  I was in back in the Vietnam days and my dad, Colonel Edward Reams, was in during the Korean Days.  Like Willie Nelson sings: “It’s a family tradition.”  It did give me goose bumps to stand there and take pictures of this milestone in Johnny’s life.

I have been asked how I feel about Johnny signing up to serve and I must tell you that from a proud father’s point of view, I am damn proud of my son, Jonathan Edward Reams.

I must admit that I am not looking forward to see him head off into harm’s way but I know that God has him covered and will guide and protect him.  I will be I prayer each day for this young and courageous man named at birth for a very courageous man in the Bible.

You go Johnny and stand straight and tall for our country.  (I won’t get to call him Johnny much longer)  You wouldn’t believe how good he looked with the best posture he has ever had.  I am going to keep a photo journal on my website at www.gosid.com for you to follow along with me.  I see this as a wonderful experience for Johnny and our whole family.  I’m inviting you to be a part of it with me.

Sing along with me.. “When Johnny comes marching home again…” I’m going to Best Buy right here in Manteca and get a new camera just to take some fantastic pictures of him.  I think I will get one of those fancy jobbie do’s that you just hold down the button and it takes one picture after another.  One that will have at least 20x close-ups so I can get some real good pictures.  I will make sure I post them on my website at www.gosid.com.  Turn on your computer and take a look.

The Bible says that pride goeth before the fall and that pride is sinful, but I don’t think it meant this kind of pride.  I mean the buttons kept popping off my shirt from me being so swelled up.  I am very proud of you Johnny.  Karen was there with me and took a bunch of pictures also.  Johnny’s mom, grandma and his step-dad were there too.  It was a good one of a kind day.

I’m going to close on this note and keep this high going.  Remember, you keep reading and I will keep writing and make sure you go to our favorite church this weekend and pray for Johnny.  If you don’t have a church home, come and sit with Karen and me at Cossroads Grace on Moffat Boulevard.  We sit in the front row or close to it during the 10:45 service
