The Cpl. Charles O, Palmer II Memorial Troop Support Program is scheduling a “Happy New Year” troop packing event on Sunday, Jan. 17.

“Many did not make it home for the holiday season and we want to sure they know they are not forgotten,” said Chuck Palmer.

He’s the father of Manteca High product Cpl. Palmer, who was killed in 2007 while stationed in Iraq.

“It’s been sometime since we last sent (the troops) anything. Therefore, we’re making this care packing all that more important,” said the older Palmer.

The troop packing event and donation drive for this cause will take place at the McFall-Grisham American Legion Post 249, 220 E. Yosemite Ave. beginning at 2 p.m.

“It’s cold so let’s keep that in mind – hand warmers, heavy-duty socks (black or white), hot cocoa, coffee packs, creamer packets (all flavors) as well as our usual items for personal care, writing material, and envelopes,” Palmer said, reeling off a few items.

He’s also looking for folks to continue donating the following:

uGames, toys, CDs and DVDs.

uSoap, shampoo, lotion, hand sanitizer, toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and other personal hygiene items.

uFeminine hygiene products.

uHigh protein snacks such as jerky, energy bars, and non-perishable foods.

uSugar, salt, pepper, ketchup, mustard and other condiments.

uNail clippers, lip balm, unscented wipes, comb, disposable razors and hair brush.

Money donations are needed to help defray the cost for packaging, with each box costing $15.90.

Checks can be made payable to: Cpl. Palmer II MTSP.

Folks can also drop off any of the following items or donations at American Legion Post 249 or the following places – Smog Tech (195 S. Union St., Manteca), Armor Up (2511 N. Tracy Blvd., Tracy), and Freedom Smog (830 Kansas Ave. C1, Modesto).
