Demps hits GW jumper for Sac State

RIVERSIDE (AP) — Cody Demps made a game-winning jumper with 17 second left to lift Sacramento State over UC Riverside 70-69 on Monday night.

Steven Thornton’s three-point play with 2:52 left gave UC Riverside the lead at 69-66. Then Mikh McKinney pulled Sacrament State within 69-68 with 1:15 left to setup Demps’ heroics.

McKinney led Sacrament State (1-1) with 22 points, on 9-of-16 shooting. Zach Mills added 15, Eric Stuteville 12, Dylan Garrity 11 and Demps finished with five points. The Hornets made 29 of 53 shots, including 5 of 9 3-pointers.

UC Riverside (1-1) was paced by Taylor Johns with 19 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. Jaylen Bland added 17 and Thornton 14. The Highlanders made 29.2 percent of their 24 attempts from behind the arc.

Bland’s 3-pointer with 6:05 left gave Riverside its largest lead of the second half at 62-55.
