No. 16 Michigan falls at No. 12 Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Christian Watford scored 25 points, and Verdell Jones broke a late tie with four straight points to help No. 12 Indiana beat No. 16 Michigan 73-71 on Thursday night.

Indiana (14-1 2-1 Big Ten) stayed perfect at Assembly Hall and beat a third ranked team this season — its most in one season since 2005-06.

Tim Hardaway Jr. had 19 points for Michigan (12-3, 2-1) while Jordan Morgan added 12. The Wolverines have lost 14 of their last 15 at Indiana since 1996.

Hardaway converted a turnover into a dunk to tie the score at 68 with 3:07 to go, Jones broke the tie with four straight points. Watford then made 1 of 2 free throws and Zack Novak’s long heave was off the mark.

NO. 17 UNLV 89, CAL ST. BAKERSFIELD 57

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — Mike Moser and Justin Hawkins both scored 17 points and UNLV won its seventh straight game.

Moser had 11 rebounds for the Rebels (16-2), who outscored the Roadrunners (7-9) 51-30 in the second half.

Oscar Bellfield had seven points and two assists in UNLV’s 16-2 run to open the second half that gave the Rebels a 54-29 lead with 16:08 to play.

Zachary Lamb scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting for Bakersfield.

UNLV outrebounded the Roadrunners 43-28 and forced 14 turnovers.

NO. 24 SDSU 83, SAN DIEGO CHRISTIAN 52

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Junior guard DeShawn Stephens scored a career-high 18 points for San Diego State.

Garrett Green added 14 points, Chase Tapley and Jamaal Franklin had 11 each, and Alec Williams scored 10 for the Aztecs (13-2), who won their sixth straight game.

Ryan Rubino had 13 points for the Hawks (4-7).

The Aztecs are off to the second-fastest start in school history. Last season’s team opened 15-0 en route to the best record in school history, 34-3.

San Diego State led 44-26 at halftime. The Hawks showed some life in the second half with a 9-3 run that pulled them to 55-39 with 13:37 to play before the Aztecs opened it up again.

NO. 25 GONZAGA 73, PEPPERDINE 45

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Freshman Gary Bell Jr. scored 15 points and Gonzaga beat Pepperdine for the 21st consecutive time.

Robert Sacre and Kevin Pangos each scored 11 points for Gonzaga (12-2, 2-0 West Coast Conference), which has won seven straight since consecutive losses to Illinois and Michigan State. They have not lost to the Waves since 2002, their longest current streak against a WCC rival.

Jordan Baker scored 10 points to lead Pepperdine (7-7, 1-2), which has not beaten a ranked opponent since 1994.

The Waves, who came in averaging 60 points per game, never led in the game and shot just 28.3 percent from the field. Their season-low had been 39 points in a loss to UCLA.

UTAH STATE 72 FRESNO STATE 53

LOGAN, Utah (AP) — Preston Medlin scored 19 points to lead Utah State past Fresno State 72-53 Thursday night in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Kyisean Reed added 16 points on 7 of 8 shooting and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for the Aggies (9-6). Morgan Grim scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Utah State.

Jonathan Wills led the Bulldogs (7-9) with 16 points. Jerry Brown scored 14 and Kevin Olekaibe had 11 points for Fresno State.
