It took visiting Acalanes of Lafayette just 11 plays to score four times in the first quarter Saturday night on the way to a convincing 59-6 non-league victory over Sierra at Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium.

“I was kind of worried because we have only done a scrimmage and that was cut short,” Dons coach Floyd Burnsed said. “We really didn’t know what we were going to do tonight.

“I thought we played well. We played all 62 players and they all executed well.”

On the final play of the third quarter, the Timberwolves’ Noel Ruezga stripped the ball loose from the Acalanes ball carrier and returned the ball 43 yards to the Dons 2-yard line. Two plays later Tyler Looney bulled it in from the 1 for the lone Sierra score.

o me and when I tackled him I decided to rip the ball out,” Ruezga said. “I tried my best to score.”

Victor Serna brought the hometown crowd to its feet when he was a step away from returning the second-half kickoff for a touchdown, instead returning it 45 yards into Acalanes territory. The Timberwolves (0-2) could not build any momentum on Serna’s runback, gaining just two yards on the ensuing series.

“I saw an opening and I went through it,” Serna said. “I tried to get some points on the board to start the half.”

Ryan Torres recovered a muffed Dons pitch with 8:52 left in the third quarter, giving Sierra the ball at the Dons 40 line. This time the Timberwolves lost three yards on their possession.

Luke Souza (7 of 8 passing, 178 yards, three touchdowns; 1 carry, 28 yards, touchdown) did a masterful job of running the offense for Acalanes (1-0), leaving the game at halftime with a 46-0 lead and his offense having racked up 397 yards. The Dons finished with 567 yards.

Sierra could not get any offense going all night, picking up just 50 yards.

“Obviously, we have a lot of work to do,” Timberwolves coach Chris Johnson said. “We have a young squad and most of these kids have never really played football before.

“Acalanes has a lot of talent and we put teams like that on the schedule to prepare us for the Mantecas, Oakdales and Centrals. Our kids need reps like that. As bad as the score is, right now it is about getting better each week. Every down we get to play is a down we didn’t get to play before.”
