A couple of big plays was more than enough to propel Sierra High past Kimball Friday.
“Our defense was especially physical,” said Timberwolves coach Chris Johnson following the 28-7 homecoming victory.
Sierra (1-0 VOL, 2-2) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard.
On the first play from scrimmage, junior Larenz Redd went 65 yards for the touchdown.
The Timberwolves tacked on to their lead shortly before the intermission.
Prior to that, neither team mustered much on offense.
Frankie Vela found some running room, picking up 20 yards to move the ball deep inside Jaguars territory.
A few plays later, Daemon Duran punched the ball into the end zone from the 4.
Ahead 14-0, Sierra added to its lead in the third.
David Reyes recovered a fumble on Kimball’s fourth-down play.
Moments later, Redd, who had 101 yards on 19 carries, scored from the 1 and later tallied his second touchdown while giving his team a 21-0 lead.
Kimball (0-1, 0-4) finally connected on a big play early in the fourth.
Quarterback Kyle Gibson, who was 5 of 13 passing, found Ryan Ziller in stride for a 23-yard scoring strike.
Sierra nearly botched a punt. But the defense once again came to rescue, keeping the Kimball offense in check.
Not long after that, Duran broke loose for a 56-yard touchdown run, in turn, putting the game on ice.
“The credit goes to our ‘o’ line,” said Johnson of his interior linemen.
Duran ended up with 82 yards on 11 carries.
Quarterback Nick Stanley was 5 of 7 passing for 39 yards and an interception. He also ran for 27 yards on nine carries.
“It was great to see everyone step up tonight,” Johnson said.
