East Union running back Brayden Camara broke a single-season school record for rushing touchdowns on senior night, while quarterback Kirk Simoni returned to action from an Achilles injury on Friday in a 55-21 thrashing of Mountain House at Dino Cunial Stadium.
The Lancers (3-3 Valley Oak League, 7-3 overall) hit the seven-win mark for just the third time in the last 20 years, and they’re going into the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoffs with some needed momentum after dropping their previous three contests.
Coming off a needed bye week, East Union had the opportunity to work out the kinks while back at full strength. Simoni strained an Achilles in the Lancers’ Week 8 loss to Central Catholic and was out the following week against two-time reigning league champion Manteca.
“We got healthy (over the bye week),” EU coach Jason Stock said. “Offensively, I thought we played very well and kind of picked up where we left off. Defensively, we still have some things to fix.”
East Union had trouble containing Mountain House standout Erin Foster, but so did most other teams that the Mustangs (1-5, 3-7) previously faced. The speedster played quarterback (7-of-15, 133 yards, touchdown), running back (23 rushes, 197 yards, TD) and receiver (28-yard touchdown catch).
He alone was not enough to match the Lancers’ firepower.
Camara scampered for a career-high 249 yards and five touchdowns on 18 carries. He ends the regular season with 23 rushing touchdowns, surpassing the previous program record of 21.
The 5-foot-8, 185-pound senior picked up much of the yardage on back-to-back carries in the fourth quarter, a 60-yard touchdown followed by a 61-yard scamper in which he was stopped short of the goal line by Foster. Camara barreled his way into the end zone from 3 yards out on the next play for the last of his five TDs.
“I just want to give thanks to my line,” Camara said. “The holes were wide open, so I was able to run for 60 (yards) and another 60. Huge credit to my teammates and coaches for believing in me.”
Simoni looked sharp on his first game back, completing 10 of 13 passes for 192 yards and touchdown tosses of 63 and 38 yards to Daniel Grijalva (two receptions, 78 yards) and Jackson Fay (three receptions, 55 yards), respectively.
“I’m feeling good. Physically, I feel a lot better, and mentally, just happy for the team getting the win,” Simoni said. “I got to get caught up to speed, which was important, because now we can be more prepared as a team to face whatever opponent we’re going to face (in the playoffs).”
The only downer for Simoni was the interception he threw on his final attempt of the night. He targeted JP Abrew — he earlier had a 67-yard touchdown on a kickoff return — in the end zone but underthrew it for Mountain House’s Elijah Ellison to pick off.
Remarkably, that is Simoni’s first interception of the season — and perhaps the last.
“I was telling Coach (Teejay) Gordon (EU’s offensive coordinator) that I got that out of the way now, so that in the playoffs, can keep on rolling,” Simoni said.
Postseason brackets will be released by the SJS on Sunday.
