SACRAMENTO — It was a record-setting effort Friday by Sierra High safety AJ Chapman.
At least unofficially, according to Timberwolves coach Jeff Abrew following his team's 24-14 non-league victory at Sheldon.
Neither he nor SHS Athletic Director Les Wheeler or former AD Anthony Chapman — AJ's father — could not recall a player from the school coming up with four interceptions in a single game.
"It was something we needed in a game like this," said Abrew, who especially thrilled to see hid team improve to 3-1 as Valley Oak League approaches.
AJ Chapman was also surprised with his interceptions.
"I was not expecting anything like that coming into this game," he said, praising his defensive teammates for helping preserve the hard-fought win over the home team Huskies (2-2) of the Delta League.
After a sluggish first quarter, both teams finally got untracked offensively in the second.
Sierra used short pass plays orchestrated by quarterback Zak Willson, and power running by Brandon Felt.
Sheldon relied on a pair of big plays by signalcaller Gavin Workman.
"We knew they had players capable of breaking loose," Abrew said.
The Timberwolves scored first, putting together a time-consuming 70-yard, eight-play drive capped by Felt's 2-yard run.
They had a chance to add to that lead but coughed the ball up in the Huskies’ end zone following a big pass play.
Sheldon capitalized on the next play, with Workman finding Zion Johnson, who got behind the defense, on the home-run play.
Sierra came right back with a nine-play, 80-yard drive, highlighted by Willson connecting with Trevor Sutton on the 11-yard scoring play.
The Huskies tied the game at 14-14 before the half, with Workman hitting Jayden Tate on an 80-yard TD in a nearly carbon copy of the previous score.
The Timberwolves went ahead for good in the third quarter on Felt's second touchdown of game. He powered his way with a game-high 101 yards on 18 carries.
Chapman, who had the first on his interception midway in the third, came to with his second theft early in the fourth, setting up Sutton's 21-yard field goal to make it a two-possession game.
The 6-6 junior helped put the game away with those final two interceptions.
