Cougars run away from Spartans in second half

LATHROP — Donnell Simms ran for more than 200 yards, and Tremain Buntan also eclipsed the century mark to lead Weston Ranch to a 42-14 Valley Oak League over host Lathrop on Friday night.

“We got off to a slow start,” Cougars coach Mike Hale said. “But then we got our running game going in the second quarter. After that, we were able to keep the ball moving.

Buntan (11 carries, 214 yards) and Sims each had touchdowns in the first half — Buntan’s with the game’s first score in the opening period from 50 yards out ,and Sims on a 16-yard run in the second quarter.

Ricky Chavez’s 2-yard second-quarter run for the Spartans (1-6, 0-4) made the halftime score 13-7 in favor of Weston Ranch.

But 22 third-quarter points by the Cougars – with 2- and 23-yard touchdown runs by Buntan and a 57-yard scamper by Sims – broke the game wide open. Demetrius Kelly put the exclamation point on the night for Weston Ranch (2-2 VOL, 3-4) with a 48-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Dennis Johnson got the second touchdown for the Spartans (0-4, 1-6) with a 7-yard run in the fourth quarter.
