East Union visited Ceres Friday with hopes of leaving with a little momentum going into the Valley Oak League season.

The Lancers would end up returning to Manteca with yet another disheartening loss, this time falling 33-21 to the previously-winless Bulldogs.

Ceres (1-3) scored just 14 points in its previous three nonleague contests while giving up 134. Its offense finally kicked into gear Friday night, torching East Union (0-3) for 302 yards on 53 rushes.

Zach Naylor did most of the damage, hitting paydirt three times on runs from 10, 2 and 80 yards out. George Arroyo added two touchdowns. Blake Hurst kept EU’s defense honest by throwing 147 yards and no picks on 15-of-24 passing.

Running back Mark Aguilar got EU on board in the third quarter with a 30-yard jaunt that closed his team in, 20-7. Early in the fourth, T.J. Williams caught the first of two touchdown passes from Joe Menzel from 20 yards out to give the Lancers some hope of coming back.

That was when Naylor busted his 80-yard scoring run that gave Ceres some needed breathing room.

Aguilar accounted for 65 of the Lancers’ 83 total rushing yards on seven attempts. He also caught three passes for 58 yards.

Menzel completed 19 of 34 passes for 260 yards, two TDs and an interception. Williams finished with six catches for 87 yards and two scores, and Diego Castillo added three receptions for 63 yards.

East Union heads to Lathrop (1-2) next week to open VOL play.
