JV Indians remain undefeated after edging out East Union

 Ripon broke open a tie game in the fourth period Friday and pulled away for a 29-22 non-league junior varsity football game over host East Union at Dino Cunial Stadium.

Ace Dougherty scored two rushing touchdowns for Ripon (3-0), while Matthew Gaines and quarterback Andrew Shaw each contributed one.

Shaw finished with 72 yards rushing on 11 carries, as well as 82 yards on 7-of-14 passing. Marco Arroyo caught two of those passes for 45 yards.

Xabriel Reyes highlighted the Indians’ defense with an interception.

The Lancers’ Peyton Heath (12 of 27 passing, 297 yards passing) had touchdown throws of 2 and 91 yards to Ricky Soria (four receptions, 124 yards) and Erick Cortez added a 10-yard touchdown run. Nikko Hisatomi added 169 yards on seven receptions.

Erick Cortez led the defense for East Union (1-1) with eight tackles followed by Jesse Martinez (six tackles), Shane Saenz (five tackles) and Nikko Hisatomi (three tackles, interception).


Manteca 35, Laguna Creek 6

Jeremiah Orona threw for two touchdowns and ran for one for the visiting Buffaloes (2-0).

Orona (5 of 8 passing, 149 yards; seven carries, 41 yards) had touchdown throws of 3 yards to William Brown, and 75 yards to JuJu Ramirez (three receptions, 115 yards). Luke Avila (seven carries, 80 yards) scored on a 15-yard, run and Roman Duvernay (11 carries, 57 yards) added a 1-yard scoring plunge.

Manteca’s Joey Aucello made four tackles with three apiece for Dean Sortonis (forced fumble, fumble recovery), Richie Robledo (fumble recovery) and Valentino Torres.

The Cardinal falls to 1-2.


Ripon Christian 8, Calaveras 7

The Knights defense came up big when it had to.

Trailing by a point midway through the second period, the Red Hawks (1-1) found themselves at first and goal. Ripon Christian (3-0) rose to the occasion, stuffing Calaveras four plays inside the 10-yard line and keeping the Red Hawks out of the end zone the rest of the way.

Jock DeJong paced that stingy Knights defense with nine tackles. Matthew Trejos added seven stops with four apiece for Noah DeBruyn and Jeremy Molloy.

Josiah Van Vliet (5 of 15 passing, 82 yards) hit Stadtler Postma (two receptions, 17 yards) with an 11-yard scoring pass with 3:06 left in the first period followed by the all-important two-point conversion pass to Brayden Hughes for an 8-0 Ripon Christian lead.

Talen Tameling gained 46 yards on eight carries for the Knights with a 23-yard reception and Tyler Van Elderen pulled in one reception for 31 yards.


Patterson 27, Lathrop 0

The Tigers (1-0-2) took a 13-0 first-period lead and the Spartans (0-3) never recovered.

Lathrop’s Keonie Green gained 82 yards on 10 carries. Ekam Sohal added 76 yards on 15 carries, Reyes Guerrero chipped in 58 yards on seven carries and Jayden White posted four carries for 35 yards.   

Jayden White paced the Lathrop defense with seven tackles followed by Avner Faaaliga with four stops and three apiece for Ayden Louie, Reyes Guerrero and Elijah McAllister. Ekem Sohal contributed on defense.


Freshman

Manteca 44, Laguna Creek 6

Brody Carabello ran for two touchdowns and threw for one for the Buffaloes (2-1).

Carabello (three carries, 92 yards; 11 of 14 passing) posted touchdown runs of 35 and 58 yards, while throwing a 14-yard touchdown pass to Josiah Moreno (three receptions, 56 yards).

Brixton Menchaca-Ortiz (six carries, 40 yards) scored on a 1-yard run, Alex Espinoza added a 6-yard scoring run and Brandon Maravilla scored from 9 yards out. Bode Hiatt made four receptions for 74 yards, and Josiah Moreno added 56 yards on three receptions.

Manteca’s Camden Rodgers made eight tackles, Bode Hiatt (fumble recovery) seven, Alex Espinoza and Josiah Moreno (interception) six apiece, Carabello (interception) four with three apiece for Menchaca-Ortiz and Richard Smith.


Patterson 18, Lathrop 14

Randall Wright scored on a pair of 2-yard runs for the Spartans (2-1).

Didier Lofaro paced the Lathrop offense with 87 yards on 14 carries. Jaylen Santos added 77 yards on 11 carries, with Alex Smith adding 18 carries for 68 yards.

Josiah Brechtel, Dario Joseph (fumble recovery), Jaylen Santos (two pass breakups) and Jacob Aguilar made three stops apiece for the Spatans, and Sael Sanchez contributed to the defense.

The Tigers improve to 2-1.


Ripon 42, East Union 12

Max Abrew threw a pair of touchdown passes for the Lancers (1-1).

Abrew (95 yards passing) tallied a 13-yard touchdown throw to Gunnar Fay and one of 18 yards to Jackson Frith (three receptions, 57 yards). Adrian Sena added 100 yards on six carries.

Sena, Jacob Ramirez and Darrion Brown Jr. tallied six tackles each.

At press time, the Indians (2-0) had not reported statistics to the Bulletin.
