Kimball posts first win at Lathrops expense

TRACY – Lathrop came out in the third quarter and got two scores via the no-huddle offense and take a one-point lead, but an 80-yard scoring run by Kimball’s Zack Johnson put the Jaguars ahead to stay in the 26-21 Valley Oak League win for Kimball at Don Nicholson Stadium.

“I don’t think we played very well in the first half and we wanted to come out after halftime and increase our tempo,” Spartans coach Jesse Rodriguez said. “And that did work.

“But we ended up making some mistakes so we had to coach them on the run and ended up having to huddle up a bit.”

The win marked the first-ever varsity victory for Kimball (1-6 VOL, 1-9 overall) in its first year of varsity competition and no senior class. Lathrop (0-7, 2-8), meanwhile, will have to wait until next year to try and notch its first VOL varsity win.

“Maybe we don’t have to hear it any more that we are not going to win a game,” Jaguars coach Steve Aanastasio said. “I just hope we can continue to keep it going.”

Xavier Walden (18 carries, 115 yards) was the workhorse for Lathrop, accounting for more than one-third of the Spartans offense.  Walden scored on a 1-yard run and Andrew Aquino (11 carries, 90 yards) had touchdown runs of 8 and 46 yards.

Johnson (nine carries, 102 yards; 5 of 8 passing, 177 yards) threw scoring passes of 10 yards to Tyler Sousa and 9 yards to Justin Griffith and ran in another from 1 yard out.
