RIPON — The Ripon Christian Knights opened Southern League play by easily handling Waterford 42-6 on Friday.
Senior Michael Kamps, to no surprise, led the way. He scored three touchdowns on offense, and registered a sack and recovered a fumble on defense.
Ripon Christian (1-0 SL, 4-0 overall) took a 7-0 advantage in the first quarter. Quarterback Cade Alger connected with Kamps on a 17-yard scoring strike at the 6:43 mark. Jacob Van Groningen connected on the extra-point kick.
The Knights got the ball back and Kamps again found the end zone, scoring on a 3-yard run.
RC broke the game open in the second quarter.
Down 13-0, Waterford (0-1, 1-3) further reeled when the Knights went on a second-quarter scoring spree.
They made it 21-0 on Kamps’ 6-yard run before he and Alger connected on the two-point conversion pass.
In the final minute before the half, Alger hit Austin Ries on a 15-yard scoring strike and, with four ticks before the intermission, had a 13-yard touchdown run to make it 35-0.
The Knights added one more score in the second half — Max Steele had a one-yard TD plunge at the 6:25 mark of the third quarter.
RC mostly played ball-control behind the running of Michael Solario in the second half.  The senior running back tallied a game-high 138 yards on 14 carries.
Alger completed 6 of his 9 passes for 81 yards.
Nolan Lingley also saw snaps at quarterback, completing 1 of 4 passes for 27 yards.
Defensively, junior linebacker Wyatt Van Vliet led the way with 10 tackles and an interception. Senior Drew Van Vliet also chipped in with 10 tackles.
