STOCKTON — East Union High suffered a heart-breaking 27-26 non-league loss Friday at Lincoln.
The Lancers (3-2) led for the better part of three quarters only to see the Trojans rally from a 26-13 deficit by scoring twice in the final three minutes.
"It wasn't the outcome we had hoped," said EU coach Mike Kuhnlenz. "Still, I'm super proud of our guys. They played their hearts out."
His sophomore quarterback Kirk Simoni completed 26 of 35 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns.
Sophomore running back Brayden Camara powered his way with a game-high 56 yards on 17 carries and a score
Lincoln (3-2) of the Tri-City Athletic League was led by senior quarterback Martin Tokmo, who threw for four TDs including three in the fourth.
The Trojans wasted little time, scoring on their first play. Tokmo threw a short pass to his speedy receiver Terrence Hampton, who did the rest from there by outrunning the EU defense for a 60-yard touchdown.
The Lancers answered back on a time-consuming 15-play, 70-yard drive, capped by Simoni hitting JP Abrew on a 17-yard scoring strike.
Knotted at 6-6, East Union orchestrated another long drive in the second quarter. The defense settled in with Carson Sanders making a third-down stopped followed by Brady Rossi's sack.
Camara was instrumental on the next drive. He picked up 26 yards and, following a pass interference call by Lincoln, scored a few plays later on a 1-yard run. Camara also powered his way on the two-point conversion.
East Union took a 14-6 lead into the half thanks in part to Chris Gallego's interception.
The Lancers opened the second half with Simoni connecting with Jackson Fay on a short pass. He turned upfield and broke loose for a 70-yard score.
Down 20-6, Lincoln took advantage of good field position by stopping East Union on fourth-down play.
Tokmo found Hampton in the end zone from 10 yards out, trimming the lead, 20-13.
The Lancers responded with a score — Simoni connected with Robby Espinosa, upping the lead at the 3:36 mark in the fourth, 26-13.
Tokmo led the comeback from there, finding Jaythn Long on a 21-yard TD.
Lincoln recovered the onside kick and went back to work.
In the final minute, Tokmo tied the game at 26-26, tossing a 10-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Chrim-Cordero.
Kaylee Gerardot kicked the extra point for the game-winner.
