Manteca High seniors Alex Laurel and Billy Sharmoug were both selected to the Sacramento Valley Chapter’s National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame All-Sac-Joaquin Section football team.

Sharmoug, who starts at left guard and the defensive line for the Buffaloes (13-1), was named to the all-section offense, joining a star-studded cast that includes Folsom’s record-breaking quarterback Jake Browning, and Sacramento wide receiver Damen Wheeler. Manteca defeated Wheeler and his Dragons 49-6 in the SJS Division III title game last Friday.

Central Catholic offensive lineman Spencer Stark, Tracy punter Anthony Nunez and Central Catholic kicker Kenny Smart were the only other players from the southern half of the section to make the first team.

Laurel earned honorable mention. He is the Valley Oak League’s Most Valuable Player after leading the Buffs to an undefeated run through conference play. His 1,799 rushing yards are a new modern-day record for Manteca’s tradition-rich program. Laurel’s 47 overall touchdowns are believed to be an all-time record.

Other notables from the region to make the honorable mention list are Central Valley running back Ja’Quan Gardner, Tracy running back Nate Jones, Lincoln defensive lineman Cyrus Boone, Merced defensive lineman Jamell Bedford and Hilmar linebacker Joseph Bello,

Laurel and Sharmoug return to action this Saturday in the CIF Division II Regional Championship Bowl Game at Stockton’s Lincoln High, where they will encounter Northern Section champion Enterprise (12-0) of Redding.
